Kuwait’s air defence systems intercepted hostile missiles and drones early Thursday amid another escalation in regional hostilities, according to statements from the Kuwaiti Armed Forces and international media reports.
In an official statment, the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces said air defence systems were actively responding to incoming missile and drone threats, describing the attacks as part of continued Iranian aggression. It advised residents that explosions heard across the country could be the result of defensive interceptions and urged the public to follow security and safety instructions issued by the authorities.
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry subsequently condemned what it described as repeated Iranian attacks on the country, saying the escalation represented a breach of Kuwaiti sovereignty and posed a direct threat to the security of citizens and residents. The ministry said the latest attacks followed previous strikes involving missiles and drones and reaffirmed Kuwait’s right to defend its territory and vital infrastructure.
The latest incident came after renewed US military strikes against targets in Iran earlier in the week. Iran has responded by targeting US military facilities and countries hosting American forces across the region.
Iran’s military said it had targeted the Ahmad Al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait, claiming that missiles and drones were directed at US military communications systems, equipment storage facilities and aircraft hangars at the base. Kuwaiti authorities have not confirmed Iran’s claims regarding damage to those facilities.
The Indian Express reported that sirens sounded in Kuwait early Thursday as air defence systems engaged incoming threats. The newspaper described the attack as part of Iran’s retaliation following US bombardments earlier in the week.
The Associated Press also reported that Iran had targeted US allies in the Gulf on consecutive nights, with missile and drone activity affecting Kuwait and Bahrain as the confrontation between Washington and Tehran widened.
Wider Gulf escalation
The attacks come amid renewed military activity around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping corridors. Fighting intensified after the United States struck Iranian military targets associated with missile, maritime and mine-laying capabilities, while Iran responded with attacks against American military facilities and US partners across the Middle East.
The escalation has heightened security concerns across the Gulf at a time when shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is already under significant pressure, increasing risks for oil and LNG transportation as well as regional maritime operations.
